Autism: Why does no one listen?

This is my own personal experience with my son who has autism. I did not discover this condition until I took him to pre-school for his speech delay. I knew that something was not quite right with him when he reached todder status and could barely talk, he hated loud noises and hated to be touched. Then when he went to the Janet Clemmons Ctr here in my home state of Hamilton is when he finally received an unofficial diagnosis.
I wanted to get an official diagnosis but never could find the resources or time to do so. And, after losing my insurance(it cost too much and I had to abandon it), I just knew that getting the diagnosis would cost money that I did not have, and so therefore, I had to put it off for almost three years now that I have insurance through my husband's new job.
Well, I went to the pediatrician and I happened to be very sick that day..
I had waited for so long and did not want to put off the session any longer..
Well, big mistake on my part.
Not only was I sick, but, I had no babysitter for my younger son who is now three and so I had to try to keep an eye on him..
So, the doc comes in and he has no clue why I am there. (They did not tell him anything!)
I tell him everything about my son and the problems he has been having for years, and the problem with him at school.
My son can not sit still at school (He fidgets, makes noises and has even eaten stuff off the floor) And the worst thing is that at seven years old, he is only half way potty trained.
Well, back to the problems..
Toward the end of the visit, he hands me paperwork and tells me to come back for yet another visit and I think that they will do the testing for the autism like I asked..
But, no that was not the case at all.
When I got home I looked through the paperwork and one paper in particular caught my eye..
The bottom sheet read: Testing for ADD/ADHD or to those who don't know, stands for Attention deficit disorder and or Attention deficit, hyperactivity disorder. Needless to say, I was steaming mad!
After gettting there and waiting for an hour, trying to pay attention to the doc and my younger son at the same time without much success, at the end of that, the annoying doc gives me the paperwork for what he wants done, and not what I asked for.
I know kids with ADD, my nephews have it and I know my son is not at all like them. He is totally different, with a different tolerance level.
In closing, I am writing this article to get my frustrations out and to hopefully resolve this issue now that I am fully recovered from my allergy attack. I do not want any person to push me around and to tell me what is wrong with my child, I know! He exhibits every one of the symptoms Austic children have and through therapy, luckily he is much happier now than he has ever been.
Nothing will ever be easy with him but, he is well worth the effort I tell you.
Just love your children and fight for them. Bless you all out there.
